Bing becomes the latest service to go dark in China

It might be the butt of many a joke but now Bing has seemingly suffered the same fate as the rest of its Western peers in China – the search engine has been blocked.

This is according to a report from Reuters in which Microsoft confirms it has succumb to what has widely become known as The Great Firewall of China.

“We’ve confirmed that Bing is currently inaccessible in China and are engaged to determine next steps,” Microsoft told Reuters.

Bing is the second Microsoft service to go dark in mainland China. Back in 2017, Skype became inaccessible join a plethora of other Western websites that are blocked in the nation.

As to why Bing has been blocked – that’s not clear at this stage. By all appearances Microsoft was following the government’s policy on internet communications, including the censoring of search results.

Whatever the reason the fact is that fewer and fewer Western online services are available in China. Of course, China has its own services but even then it’s not without issue.

Just this week the Tencent owned news service Tiantian Kuaibao was accused of spreading “vulgar, negative and harmful information” by local authorities.

The Cyberspace Administration of China also said that in the last six months it has closed 733 websites and removed 9 382 apps from the country’s internet.
