The number of schools receiving a zero matric pass rate increased in 2018

Although the matric pass rate has increased to 78.2 percent in 2018, there is still the issue of schools which have obtained a zero percent pass rate for the end of year exams.

This number has increased by three schools in total from 2017 with 12 failing to get even one of their matric students to pass their final exams.

“We will be the first to concede that, despite the notable stability of improvements in the system, we are yet to cross our own Rubicon. We must agree that much has been achieved, but much more needs to be done in the areas of efficiency and quality,” said the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, while announcing the results.

The province with the highest number of zero pass rate schools is KwaZulu- Natal, which had a total of forty schools obtaining between zero to 20 percent pass rate. This was followed closely by Limpopo with 23 schools, the Eastern Cape in third with 17 schools, while Mpumalanga and Western Cape each had two schools and North West had one school.

This year KwaZulu-Natal increased from 2017 as a total of nine schools achieved zero percent pass rate. Limpopo also increased from a single  school in 2017 to three schools this year.

The Eastern Cape showed improvement as it had two schools in 2017 with a zero percent pass rate, to no school making the list in 2018. Gauteng had one school that was in the list in 2017 with the Fourways Adult Centre, but  the school was not on the list this year.
