Windows 10 Mobile end of life set for December 2019

Anybody that still uses a smartphone running Windows 10 Mobile will surely be saddened by the news that Microsoft will end support for it in December of this year.

In truth, this has been a long time coming.

Back in 2017 Microsoft released version 1709 of Windows 10 Mobile and announced that it would no longer develop new features or hardware for the OS.

“Windows 10 Mobile users will no longer be eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free,” Microsoft wrote in an updated FAQ last week.

The official death knell for Windows 10 Mobile will sound on 10th December 2019.

Of course, folks could still use Windows 10 Mobile in much the same way that folks still use Windows XP and Windows 7. Those that choose to do so however, are doing it at their own risk because, as Microsoft outlined above, no security updates will be coming your way.

For this reason Microsoft has recommended that users make the switch from Windows 10 Mobile to Android or iOS.

That’s a recommendation we advise users take seriously because as we saw with the WannaCry ransomware, running outdated software that doesn’t receive can be incredibly risky.
