Load shedding makes an unwelcome return

A cat as the header image? That can only mean one thing – load shedding has returned.

Yesterday Eskom announced that Stage 2 load shedding would be in effect from 13:00. The “festivities” stretched through to 22:00 at which point load shedding was stopped.

This morning Eskom has declared that Stage 2 load shedding will be in effect as of 09:00 today and shedding is “likely to continue until 22:00”.

“Although a number of generating units have returned to service as per the 9-point recovery plan, regrettably additional units continue to trip. This results in a shortage of generating capacity,” Eskom explained in a power alert.

South Africans who aren’t experiencing load shedding are asked to use electricity sparingly and switch off non-essential appliances, lighting and their geyser.

With the return of load shedding you might want to check the schedule for your municipality to plan your day.

Last year we compiled a list of all the municipalities who had put their schedules online. That list is still relevant and can be found here along with a number of apps that can be used to keep abreast of load shedding.

We should also point out that load shedding will only ever take place for the times stipulated by Eskom. Even if your load shedding schedule says you will be off from 20:00 to 00:00 because load shedding is scheduled to end at 22:00 your power should return by then.
