A rare copy of Super Mario for the NES sells for $100 000

If you look down on hoarders or people who don’t like to throw things away, you may be interested to hear that an ultra rare copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES just sold for more than $100 000.

Well $100 150 to be more precise.

So what makes this particular game cartridge worth that amount of money?

According to Wata Games, which certified the cartridge, it’s the only known sticker sealed version still in existence, with the sticker itself also said to be in great condition. As such Wata gave the cartridge a 9.4 out of 10 rating due to the pristine condition it was in.

Wata also adds that there are more than 11 different variations of the cartridge that were produced for the Nintendo NES console between 1985 to 1994, with some versions featuring two trademark symbols, others having none whatsoever, and a few that had slightly improved graphics with a Nintendo “Seal of Quality.”

As for who purchased the Super Mario cartridge, Heritage Auctions explains that it was a joint effort from a group of buyers. This included the founder of the auction house, a coin dealer and a few rare video game collectors.

It still remains to be seen, however, who will get to keep the cartridge, or indeed if it will have the seal cracked in order to play the game.

Nevertheless it goes to show that there is still a market for classic or retro games that are in mint condition.
