Open classic Base Set Pokémon boosters for free using this simulator

If you’ve ever wanted to relive part of your childhood and open up a sealed booster of the original Pokémon cards, you’d have to have extremely deep pockets as the remaining packs go up in price and scarcity every time someone opens them for fun (or usually, to make a YouTube video). But now you can do it for free using a simulator of sorts.

Simulators like this have existed for quite some time to “open” both physical and digital lootboxes at no cost. Their premise is simple: try to replicate the experience by duplicating rarities and drop rates , wrap it up into an app or website, and let people get their gambling hit for free.

While this works better for digital boxes – like the cases in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – it’s still a bit of fun to mess around with, especially if you need a nostalgia hit on the cheap.

Justin Keena has created his version of an opening simulator for Pokémon which is presented on an appropriately-style website. It’s even got a garish background and a hit counter at the bottom of the page, truly living up to its “90’s Nostalgia Edition” subtitle.

Here you will be able to choose from eleven different expansions: the original Base Set up to Neo Destiny. Choose your set and click “flip all” to see what your fake booster contained.

Keena stated on Reddit that each booster contains 1 one rare, three uncommons and seven commons. We’re not sure if that is exactly correct, but the site and its code is underdevelopment.

If you’d like to contribute to that code or make some changes, it’s available over on GitHub.

Alternatively, just head on over to the main site and start cracking digital packs.

You can see a bit of the interface and our pulls from a booster down below:
