Samsung officially unpacks the new Galaxy Fold

Samsung kicked off its first Galaxy Unpacked event of 2019 by debuting an all-new device category to its lineup with the Galaxy Fold.

We got a sneak peek at the device at Samsung’s Developer Conference late last year, and now the Galaxy Fold has officially seen the light of day.

Folded the device features a 4.6″ screen, but unfolded it increases to 7.3″. Samsung also developed new display technology for this form factor called Infinity Flex. The resolution for the unfolded mode is 2 152 X 1 536, with the folded version less at 1 960 X 840.

In terms of multitasking, users can have up to three different apps open on the device when unfolded, with a handful of apps already optimised for this new form factor smartphone. Samsung is also talking up the added screen real estate for entertainment, with games and movies / videos in particular being highlighted as ideal for the Galaxy Fold.

Internally the Gold is packing an octa-core 7mn processor (model name unknown) and 12GB RAM. Added to this is 512GB of eUFS onboard storage. It also sports a pair of batteries under the bonnet, totalling 4 380mAh.

In terms of cameras, the Galaxy Fold has six of them. There are three on the rear making up the primary shooter, a pair on the inside for front facing shots and one extra one for the folded mode (cover).

The primary three feature a 16MP ultrawide, 12MP wide-angle and 12MP telephoto lenses. For the front facing options, a 10MP selfie and 8MP depth of field lens on offer. Lastly the cover camera is a 10MP selfie lens.

Naturally the Galaxy Fold costs a pretty penny. $1 980 Stateside to be more precise, with it available in select regions come 26th April in both an LTE and 5G model.

No word just yet on when it will be available in South Africa, or indeed how much it will cost, but more information is expected from Samsung Mobile SA shortly.
