Canon launches EOS RP as new compact full frame mirrorless camera

Last year saw a number of high-powered mirrorless cameras enter the market, and it appears as if 2019 will be the same, with the new Canon EOS RP revealed by the Japanese camera maker.

It’s part of the same EOS R family that Canon introduced last year, but features a more compact and lightweight body for those who aren’t keen on going for a larger system found on the EOS R.

To that end it tips the scale around 485g (including battery and memory card) while still serving up a full frame design. Canon also says that the EOS RP will be able to cater to RF lenses thanks to a mount included in the design of this mirrorless camera.

As for the sensor on this model it’s a 26.2 megapixel CMOS offering, with an ISO range between 40 000 and 102 400, which is designed for better image quality in low light conditions. It also has a dual-pixel CMOS autofocus system, which Canon says features the world’s fastest autofocus speed of 0.05 seconds.

Should you be looking to use the Canon EOS RP for video, it can shoot up to 4K at 25fps, or Full HD at 60fps thanks to the DIGIC 8 processor onboard this model. There’s also built-in WiFi and Bluetooth for photographers to share images sans physical connections or remotely control the recording functionality.

Other aspects of the Canon EOS RP include an electronic viewfinder (EVF) with 263 million dots with 100 percent scene coverage, as well as an adjustable LCD screen for users to control focal points, should they wish.

There’s no precise local launch date mentioned by Canon South Africa just yet, but we’ve already seen the EOS RP appear for pre-order on Outdoorphoto for a recommended R21 495 (body only and RF lens adapter).
