Hands-On with the HMD Global’s new Nokia 9 PureView

In the midst of all the foldable phones and talk of 5G at MWC 19, you may be forgiven for missing news about HMD Global’s latest flagship phone – the Nokia 9 PureView.

There is something quite notable about the new offering, however, namely that it sports a five camera array on the rear. It’s one of the first times that such a primary camera setup has been developed, and HMD Global says it’s the most advanced system it has featured on a phone to date.

Designed by Zeiss Optics, the five camera array features two RGB lenses and three monochrome ones, all of which are 12MP each. All five lenses also shoot at once when snapping a picture.

To gain a better feel for the device we headed down to the Nokia Mobile booth at MWC 19.

Starting with design, the language, and simple Scandinavian aesthetics in particular are clear to see. Compared to Nokia’s previous notable flagship phone, the Nokia 8, this new iteration features more glass, along with an aluminium frame.

The result is a glossy looking smartphone, which means it’s a keen magnet for smudges, and will necessitate a cover as a result.

Being shiny one would think it’s less tactile, but in order to cope with this, the PureView has a curved back and the aluminium frame offers solid points at which to handle the device.

Shifting to things up front and things look pretty good hear too, with a 5.99″ P-OLED screen found. It has a crisp enough resolution at 2 880 X 1 440, but does not distinguish itself from other devices in the same tier.

Interestingly though, HMD Global opted to forego an all-screen design in favour of a more conventional bezel around the screen. As such, it may seem like a small detail, but it shows that HMD Global is more concerned with the photographic elements of the device than it is the display.

Speaking of the camera setup, we’re still on the fence, only because there’s only so many pictures one can take within the confines of an expo booth. As such we’ll need to test the array in full when a review device crosses our path. For now there’s nothing standout about it, but yet again, it’s important to stress that we still need to put it through its paces in order to give a definitive opinion.

The early verdict on the Nokia 9 PureView is that it’s yet another solid offering from HMD Global, and if the five camera array can deliver the photographic quality as the company has been touting, then it could have an intriguing option on the market.

That said, we’ll need to wait and see what kind of price tag HMD slaps on it first.
