MUT yet another KZN university to suspend academic learning due to student protests

Earlier this week the Durban University of Technology (DUT) suspended academic learning on its Durban campuses due to violent student protests.

Now the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT)’s uMlazi campus has shut its doors with immediate effect due to violent student protests.

The decision follows unrest that started earlier this week and resulted in tyres and a vehicle being torched on the university grounds. Students are protesting for improved accommodation and solutions to the poor administration of financial aid funding, including living allowances.

“Owning to violent activities on campus and off-campus residents, management has consulted council and senate, and a resolution has been taken to shut down the university with immediate effect,” said MUT’s vice-chancellor and principal, Dr Enoch Duma Malaza.

According to The Citizen, MUT has instructed all students to  vacate all campuses, with residents having been told to do so  yesterday already.

As for when the campus will resume academic activities once more, remains to be seen.
