Sony banks on 4K display and 21:9 aspect ratio for latest slew of handsets

Sony has this morning showed off three new handsets it will introduce this year during a presentation at MWC 2019.

While Samsung and Huawei have shown off folding handsets, Sony has chosen to focus on good display tech and even better cameras as a sort of retort to the current landscape of 5G enabled folding smartphones.

The main attraction at Sony’s MWC 19 booth will likely be the Xperia 1. Sony is pushing the fact that this handsets sports a 4K OLED display with HDR support rather aggressively. It also supports the BT.2020 and DCI-P3 standards for wider colour gamut and gawk-worthy visuals.

The display measures in at 6.5inches and has a 21:9 aspect ratio.

Inside the Xperia 1 is driven by a Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage.

The camera is a triple lens affair which features 16mm (F2.4), 52mm (F2.4) and 26mm (F1.6) lenses. This is coupled with an algorithm for better snaps or video whether during the day or night.

Sony also showed off the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus.

The Xperia 10 Plus houses a 6.5inch display with a FullHD+ (1080 x 2520) resolution and the same 21:9 aspect ratio as the Xperia 1.

The rear snapper is a 12MP affair paired with a dual telephoto lens. The telephoto lens is solely for stills.

Upfront is an 8MP camera for video calls, selfies and the like.

Driving the Xperia 10 Plus along is a Snapdragon 636 processor along with 4GB of memory and it’s all powered by a 3 000mAh battery.

The Xperia 10 doesn’t boast telephoto lenses and has a slightly smaller 6inch display. The FullHD+ resolution and 21:9 aspect ratio however are still present in this handset.

The chipset is also different in the Xperia 10. You can expect to find a Snapdragon 630 chipset along with 3GB of memory and 64GB of storage. This being a smaller handset, Sony has opted for a 2 870mAh battery for the Xperia 10.

While we appreciate the fact that Sony has set itself apart from the competition in some way, we do need to point out that the last time the firm introduced a 4K display it didn’t perform as well as one might hope. The Z5 was incredibly expensive but in a world where $1980 gets you a “cheap” folding phone, perhaps Sony will win over fans with its visual prowess.

There’s also the matter of pricing to consider and buyers are going to have to really want super sharp movie experiences on their mobile to justify picking a new Sony handset over what we’ve seen from LG, Nokia, Samsung and Huawei already.

There is no word yet on local pricing or availability but we’ll be sure to share that information with you when it becomes available.
