Western Cape still has 5 700 school pupils in need of placement

The Western Cape Department of Education is under pressure as it needs to ensure that 5 700 pupils are placed in schools within the coming weeks.

The Education MEC, Debbie Schafer, said the Department saw a massive increase this year as it had 18 285 pupils compared to the previous year of 16 285 pupils.

“Realistically, to accommodate this growth, we would need approximately 15 new additional schools and over 480 teachers,” said Schafer to IOL News.

According to the Department the increase comes from pupils who are coming from outside of the province. The Western Cape saw six new schools being built last year, with three new mobile schools, 46 additional mobile classrooms and 34 new brick-and-mortar classrooms.

Last week the Department ordered an additional 70 mobile classrooms. It also increased its spend on infrastructure from R445 million in 2009/10 to R1.6  billion for 2018/19

“More than 130 000 learners have moved to the Western Cape from other provinces, mainly from the Eastern Cape, placing the education system in the Western Cape under considerable pressure,” concluded Schafer.
