DUT to start multi-million rand construction in April

Earlier this week the State of University address took place at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Steve Biko campus where the vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, revealed plans to construct new buildings including student residence beginning in April.

According to IOL News, the vice-chancellor addressed issues such as student accommodation, safety concerns and plans to transform and upscale the institution. He also revealed that the constructionwill begin in April the university wants to complete the infrastructure worth R1 billion by 2030.

“A priority list has already been compiled, over the next three years, R420 million would be spent on infrastructure at the university’s Durban and Pietermaritzburg campuses,” said Mthembu.

The Department of Higher Education and Training had invested millions of rands in the development.

In his speech, the principal revealed that the university plans on reducing the student to staff ratio significantly by 2025. The final goal is for one staff member to 25 students.

“By 2025, we hope to reduce the staff to student ratio, we also hope to improve staff with doctorates. This is a university and no longer a technikon,” concluded Mthembu.
