Samsung SA gives R7 Million worth of bursaries to university students

Earlier this week Samsung South Africa hosted its “Empowering Tomorrow” event, which is aligned with the company’s global mission – “Enabling People.” At the event it gave R7 million worth of bursaries to local university students.

The event was attended by the President and CEO of Samsung Africa, Sung Yoon, along with representatives from some of SA’s top educational institutions, as well as the student beneficiaries.

“We believe this investment will help alleviate the current skills shortage facing the country, most notably through the Government’s 2030 vision,” said director of business innovation group and corporate affairs at Samsung SA, Hlubi Shivanda.

The bursaries were awarded to students from the University of Pretoria (UP), North West University (NWU) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The Gauteng Department of Education was also awarded a portion of the R7 million, but precisely how much or indeed what it would be put towards was not mentioned.

According to Samsung SA, the graduates are given the opportunity to complete their studies in either business, marketing or IT qualifications, with the company  also pledging to seek out paths to employ deserving students.

“Samsung is firmly committed to meaningful change that turns potential into power, which is why occasions such as these are truly inspiring,” concluded Shivanda.
