Gauteng has a new admission regulation for schools

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, earlier this week announced the new feeder zone regulations for schools in the province, which were recently approved by the government.

The feeder zone will allow parents to apply for school admissions within a 30km radius of their homes.

According to the MEC, this will allow for fair and transparent access to schools for parents and pupils. Pupils from any background are allowed to apply to any school despite their financial status and residential address or parent’s work address. The previous radius was within 5km of their homes.

“We are changing the look and feel of all our schools in the province, this means non-racialism is now entrenched and parents will now have a proper choice without unnecessary restrictions, Lesufi told IOL News.

The publication also notes that the new regulations changes will include that the Head of the Department will now have power to administer admissions and all forms of unfair discrimination.

The Gauteng Department of Education will publish the amendments on it’s website, and the regulations will be effective from the date of publication.

The MEC also emphasised that the changes should not give parents an excuse to apply late for admissions.

“You have to apply on time. Those who apply early and are within the feeder zone will be considered first,” concluded the MEC.
