New Twitter account confirms which videogame dogs you can pet

In the world of novelty Twitter accounts – especially those based around animals – there seems to be a limitless supply, but @CanYouPetTheDog is a bit different.

Instead of focusing on real animals to get all the retweets and likes, this account looks at dogs in videogames and asks one important question: can you pet them?

This profile, which was created earlier this month and has just 26 tweets, is already approaching the 100K follower count and a lot of people love the simple formula of asking the question of petability (that’s not a word) and then backing it up with a gif or short video.

One of our favourite games in the last few years is Enter the Gungeon with the Hunter character starting with a canine companion that will occasionally find resources for the player.

As we can attest from close to a thousand hours in the game, the dog is not pettable (again, not a word) and neither is the unlockable Wolf. A true tragedy.

Look in the replies of each tweet and you’ll find people asking developers to please fix these injustices if you can’t pet the dog, or providing praise.

If you have a game you think would fit for this account, it provides an exact definition for its criteria: “Manual input resulting in visual representation of petting is required for affirmation”. At the time of writing the direct messaging of the account is turned on so you can always shoot it a DM if you have a game in mind that you can provide proof on.

Right now @CanYouPetTheDog has covered all manner of games but some may find issue with what technically counts as a dog. This dog is a vacuum, and this one is a Varren. We’re not sure if household appliances or aliens count on a technical level, but we’re okay with it.

If you want an account that is tangentially similar, but with real dogs, we highly recommend @IvePetThatDog, which is a kind of journal of a young boy petting a lot of dogs. Along with cute pictures, it also has a bit of information about the breed of dog how old it is.
