Apple enters the gaming fray with new Arcade platform for exclusive titles

Apple’s first keynote event for 2019 just wrapped up a couple of hours ago, and the company was solely focused on services for this one. It made some improvements to existing platforms, but also debuted an entirely new offering in the form of Apple Arcade.

Housed within the App Store, Apple Arcade is the firm’s first real venture into the world of gaming, with it focused on delivering titles that can be played on the go.

With mobile gaming market becoming the behemoth it currently is in recent years, making a play for that segment makes a lot of sense, especially as Apple already has the hardware (iPhones and iPads) and eyeballs to make the most of it.

The company is still remaining rather tight-lipped on the subscription service, only noting for now that it plans to launch it Q3 / Q4 in 150-plus countries. It remains to be seen if South Africa is a part of that list, along with how much Apple Arcade will cost, with the company being particularly aloof on the latter.

What they have mentioned though, is that Apple Arcade will feature 100-plus new and exclusive titles to its platform when it does launch, as it’s already working with larger and independent game developers and studios.

Along with the focus on mobile, Apple Arcade want to limited to those platforms, with the firm porting it over to MacBooks and the Apple TV, which could open it up to an even broader user base.

Right now all we’re waiting for is pricing. Should Apple Arcade get that right, it could prove a disruptive new offering on the gaming landscape.
