Enter the Gungeon’s final DLC confirmed to be ‘A Farewell to Arms’

A few days ago we reported on a leak of the final bit of content coming to Enter the Gungeon, with the ingenious name of “A Farewell to Arms”, which has now been confirmed by the developers.

A Farewell to Arms will be a free expansion coming to the title on all platforms the game is available on (that’s PC, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox) come 5th April.

This will add two new playable characters, a secret level with its own boss, an NPC you will activate a new play-style called “Rainbow Mode”, a wallop of items and guns, as well as a host of general fixes and tweaks to balance such as the boss damage cap.

These announcements came from a string of tweets from developer Dodge Roll together with a post on the PlayStation Blog written by one of those developers.

The two new characters are Paradox and Gunslinger. Paradox is a randomised Gungeoneer (that’s what the playable characters are called in this game) with changing gear, and Gunslinger – featured along with the Lich boss in the header image above – has been in the game’s unused data for some time now.

For those into deeper lore the Gunslinger and Lich are very intertwined, but saying how might be a spoiler and we won’t know for sure until the update.

Rainbow Mode focuses on the game’s rainbow chests which are the best in the game and are so rare that those with hundreds of hours in the game may never see one. This new mode outright gives the player one of these on every level, but takes away every other item.

On this page you will find various screenshots that have been released of the new content, and with the update coming in just over a week it should be enough to tide us over.

If you’ve still not played Enter the Gungeon, it’s a rougelike bullet hell that has become one of our favourite games to be released in the last decade.

Dodge Roll has been diligently releasing free content for it since its launch back in 2016, but has decided to move onto other projects with A Farewell to Arms being the last time they visit the title for the foreseeable future.

They announced as much four months ago citing the difficulty in adding content to the game given its shaky foundations, likely a symptom of the fact that it’s the studio’s first game and they never expected it to garner such a community.

As members of that community A Farewell to Arms will be a bittersweet event as, while new toys in the Gungeon are always appreciated, we’d hoped for more paid content or even a sequel to come out.
