Google Home Mini finds a new home in a 3D printed Stargate

For the longest time the maker community has been 3D printing Stargates with the famous Arduino version still doing the rounds every so often when someone finds a gif of it in action.

While we have another Stargate to feature today, this one is a bit different in its use as it serves as a housing for a Google Home Mini. Unfortunately, unlike the gramophone print for the Amazon Echo Dot we looked at in the past this print is purely for decoration.

The maker behind this project – simply known as Dan – tells us that he modelled this print in Fusion 360, splitting it into just two parts: the ring of the gate at the top, and the stair platform leading up to it.

This was done over the course of around a week with some hurdles needing to be overcome as this was Dan’s first project of its kind.

Printing took around 26 hours to complete, resulting in a model that stands about 16 centimetres tall and, of course, houses the Google Home unit in the centre with three small arms.

The version you see on this page has had no processing once the plastics came off the printer, and a strong choice of filaments means that painting wasn’t needed. Those wanting to do so with their version may even consider installing some LEDs which we’ve seen on other Stargate projects. We’d of course recommend setting up any lighting system to be voice activated.

Those looking to make their own Stargate housing can find the files available for free over on MyMiniFactory.

MyMiniFactory is actually the reason this print came into existence, as they recently ran a contest for the community to print creative smart home speakers. That contest closes later today and we’ll have features on some of the winners in the future, which this print may be part of.

If you have no use for any of that and just want more Stargate, well here’s one to prop up your books.
