Locals turning to Google for answers ahead of local elections

South Africa will play host to elections later this year and there’s no doubt in our mind that the digital realm will play an important role.

That already appears to be coming to fruition as Google South Africa has shared some data about the questions South Africans are asking ahead of the elections.

The data outlined below includes data from the last week of searches for election topics on Google.

For the most part, locals are learning, or at least trying to learn, about how government works.

  1. What are the requirements of participating in local government elections?
  2. How can citizens contribute towards the law-making process in South Africa?
  3. What is the ANC election manifesto 2019?
  4. When is South African elections?
  5. Who will win the 2019 elections?
  6. Who won Nigeria election 2019?
  7. How does a minority party impact the law making process?
  8. How many parties registered for 2019 election?
  9. Why are there no ANC election posters?
  10. What are by elections?

We love the fact that so many folks are looking to increase their understanding of how government works and how things such as how smaller parties impact the law making process.

We feel it important to mention that you should keep your wits about you ahead of the elections. As we saw in the US meddling in elections can be incredibly easy especially on social media. We urge you to be critical of any claims made ahead of the elections, especially those you cannot verify for yourself.

As for the most searched for parties in South Africa, the ANC tops the charts but we have a surprise in second place – the EFF.

  1. African National Congress
  2. Economic Freedom Fighters
  3. Democratic Alliance
  4. Freedom Front Plus
  5. Black First Land First
  6. African Christian Democratic Party
  7. African Transformation Movement
  8. Congress of the People
  9. Inkatha Freedom Party
  10. Good

While the EFF and its leader Julius Malema were top searches last week the reason might have more to do with the party, Malema and EFF supporters threatening journalist Karima Brown online.

We’re not saying the party isn’t popular but we’d like to see this data when the EFF isn’t grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons.
