On Eskom’s birthday, the risk of load shedding is high

Today, 96 years ago, Eskom was born.

Technically, the company would only be born five days later on 6th March 1923 and then made effective from 1st March 1923 but the record books reflect that Eskom (or Escom as it was known back then) came into existence today.

To put a bit of a damper on things then, on its cake day Eskom has warned that the risk of load shedding is high.

The same warning was issued yesterday when Eskom said that due to a shortage in generating capacity load shedding might be implemented. That did not happen though as, again according to Eskom, some generating capacity returned.

However, the utility did issue a precautionary measure for its birthday.

“As the power system remains tight and volatile, the risk of rotational load shedding remains high for tomorrow as well as for the weekend when we need to replenish emergency reserves (water and diesel) to limit the possibility of load shedding in the following week,” Eskom said.

So then, we can look forward to another day of nervously checking schedules and keeping up to date with developments on Eskom’s social channels.

Here’s hoping Eskom gives us the gift of uninterrupted power for its birthday. That’d be nice.

Alternatively, we can always use the light from the birthday candles to substitute.
