Opera adds a free, unlimited VPN to its Android browser

Opera is currently in the process of releasing Opera for Android and it has a new feature that we’re rather excited about.

The latest version of the browser for Android comes equipped with a VPN service. What’s more is that the VPN is unlimited and completely free.

“There are already more than 650 million people using VPN services globally. With Opera, any Android user can now enjoy a free and no-log service that enhances online privacy and improves security,” said Peter Wallman, senior vice president of the Opera Browser for Android.

The service will be particularly useful for those that make regular use of public WiFi hotspots.

“Users are exposed to so many security risks when they connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots without a VPN,” Wallman explains.

Enabling Opera VPN means that users makes it difficult for third parties to steal information, and users can avoid being tracked. Users no longer need to question if or how they can protect their personal information in these situations.”

Opera says its VPN service uses 256-bit encryption algorithms to encrypt traffic moving between your smartphone or tablet and the hotspot or mobile network you’re using.

The VPN is also a no-log service so nothing you do while you’re connected will be retained by Opera.

Opera for Android is currently being rolled out at a gradual pace “per region” but there’s no indication of when it will be live locally.

To check if the VPN is active on your Opera browser tap browser settings and go to the VPN option to enable the feature if it is there. For those that can’t find the option you’ll likely get the update soon.

You can download Opera for Android over at the Google Play Store.
