Tesla to unveil its new Model Y SUV on 14th March

Tesla will be unveiling its latest vehicle, the Model Y SUV, later this month.

This was confirmed by the mercurial Elon Musk on Twitter over the weekend, with the Tesla co-founder noting that the debut will happen at a yet-to-be determined design studio in Los Angeles on 14th March.

Prior to Musk’s tweets all we knew about the Model Y is that it would be an SUV / Crossover vehicle. Now he has dropped a few more details about the electric vehicle ahead of its full reveal, noting that it is 10 percent larger than the Model 3, along with being roughly 10 percent more expensive, as well as featuring a slightly lower driving range than Tesla’s flagship car.

The Model Y is also said to utilise an estimated 75 percent of the same components that the Model 3 does, but will not feature the same falcon wing door mechanism as seen on the Model X.

As for that Tesla electric pick-up truck, Musk said it would be unveiled later this year, but would not be held to a specific date.

While the prospect of another electric vehicle hitting the market sounds great, with the local number of offerings limited, it is a little difficult to get excited about the Model Y, especially as Tesla is yet to fulfil its promise of launching in South Africa.

Nevertheless we’re sure Musk will hype up the Model Y, as his ridiculous plan to spell “SEXY” (Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y) with the different Tesla car names comes to fruition.
