YouTube Music has been officially launched in South Africa

With Spotify celebrating it’s first year in South Africa we weren’t expecting to hear about a new music streaming service launching locally, but here we are.

Late yesterday evening, YouTube announced that YouTube Music had been officially launched in South Africa.

While YouTube is a part of Alphabet and intrinsically a part of Google, YouTube Music doesn’t replace Google Play Music, in fact, Google Play Music subscribers will get access to YouTube Music Premium for free so long as they keep paying their subscription fee.

Nothing is changing with Google Play Music – you’ll still be able to access all of your purchased music, uploads and playlists in Google Play Music just like always,” head of marketing at Google SA, Asha Patel said.

So is YouTube Music a paid service then? Yes and no.

There is a free tier where you will hear advertising as you listen. Those that choose to pay however, will have ads removed, be able to listen to music in the background and download music for offline listening.

YouTube Music Premium costs R59.99 per month which is in-line with what other music streaming services are charging locally. There is also a Family plan available for R89.99 per month.

To sign-up for YouTube Music you can visit the website or download the app for Android or iOS.
