Cosplayers will strut their stuff at The Rand Show later this month

Later this month the annual Rand Show expo is set to take place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.

As you might be aware, this year The Rand Show will play host to a Fortnite tournament but if gaming isn’t your thing there is another geeky contest taking place.

From 20th – 21st April and 27th – 28th April, The Rand Show will play host to a number of cosplay contests. The contests will be facilitated by The Dark Carnival.

“The Rand Show is proud to introduce its first annual Cosplay Competition. The competitions have been structured to appeal to beginners and pros alike and are guaranteed to be loads of fun and an experience never to be forgotten, for both participants and spectators,” Kasoa Jabrzemski of The Dark Carnival said in a statement.

So how can you take part?

Firstly, you’ll need to head to the Gaming & Entertainment Pavilion which costs an additional R20 on top of the cost for admission to The Rand Show.

The Cosplay Masquerade is described as an informal contest where cosplayers aged six years an up are welcome to learn and talk with other cosplayers.

For cosplayers looking to take competition a bit more seriously, the Cosplay Competition will be held on 27th and 28th April and there are three divisions for the contest. Something to note is that ahead of the contest you will be pre-judged and you will have to perform a skit on-stage.

The Newcomer division is for new and casual cosplayers and there will be three age groups.

  • 6 – 12 years
  • 13- 15 years
  • 16 years and up

The intermediate division is named Like a Boss and experienced cosplayers are not allowed to enter this particular contest. This competition is for cosplayers with some experience aged 16 years and older.

The big competition is Beast Mode and is purely for experienced cosplayers. This competition is for cosplayers ages 16 and up. The Beast Mode contest will also have a R30 000 grand prize for the winner.

To enter these competitions you’ll need to head to this website to register your participation before 7th April. You won’t have to submit a photo for the entry.
