Avengers: Endgame rakes in $1.2 billion globally on opening weekend

If you watched a movie this past weekend, it was likely Avengers: Endgame.

We’re guessing as much given the Marvel franchise’s insane popularity, but also based on the recent earnings for the film on its opening weekend.

According to Variety, Endgame totalled a massive $1.2 billion globally over its four days (25th to 28th April) of cinema release, also making it the quickest film to reach that milestone.

If you’re wondering which movie held the record previously, it was The Force Awakens, which took $517 million on its opening weekend in 2015. As such Endgame was able to surpass it quite handily.

Variety explains that the Chinese market has helped push the latest Avengers film’s numbers, with Marvel Studios actively looking to tap into that particular market of late. The same goes for South Korea, which Avengers: Age of Ultron used as a major location during filming.

As for what the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) holds in store remains to be seen, especially given some of the events in Endgame, but what we do know is that there are a lot of projects in the works.

In fact, Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, says that as many as 20 films are already in the planning phase.
