Vodacom taps BlackFog to handle cybersecurity for its 43 million customers

Vodacom Business has announced a new partnership with cybersecurity specialists BlackFog, with the latter being touted to help with the privacy of the 43 million customers that Vodacom services.

The move comes as business, especially those on the African continent, are operating below the cybersecurity poverty line, as Vodacom terms it. The company cites a 2017 research report in which 95 percent of African businesses are viewed as having insufficient measures in place pertaining to cybersecurity and privacy.

This is where they’re hoping their new partnership with BlackFog can assist.

“BlackFog’s unique approach to cybersecurity and data loss using outbound data protection was an important part of the decision process. We are excited to offer this solution to our customers,” says head of cybersecurity at Vodacom Business, Sunjay Ramessur.

They note that BlackFog provides on-device data privacy and file-less cybersecurity, which is believed to be crucial in the current threat landscape. To that end 77 percent of cyberattacks are reported to be file-less and therefore 10 times more likely to succeed, according to Vodacom.

The BlackFog solution they’ll be looking to implement for their business customers consists of 12 layers of defence against ransomware, spyware, malware and phishing, as well as and unauthorised data collection and profiling.

“BlackFog is excited to partner with Vodacom to bring data privacy and cybersecurity protection to its customers across all mobile and desktop platforms,” enthuses Darren Williams, CEO of BlackFog.

“Today’s cyber-attacks are more sophisticated than ever, and we know that Hackers will always find a way into the network. Whereas most solutions focus on trying to stop an attacker from getting in or after they have already done damage, we focus on prevention. By preventing data loss, data profiling and data collection, we can detect attacks in real-time, stopping threats and preventing them from stealing data,” he concludes.

There’s no mention of when Vodacom Business customers will BlackFog’s solution in action, but we’re suspecting it will be rolled out to them in coming months.
