Ster-Kinekor offering “unlimited” movies for R349 per month in new Subscription Club

Ster-Kinekor – arguably the most popular theatre chain in the country – has launched the “SK Subscription Club” which charges a monthly fee and provides subscribers with movie tickets and discounted snacks.

The service is offered in two tiers: the Fan Club and the MORvies Club.

Fan Club costs R249 per month and allows you to see four movies per month. This also comes with a 20 percent discount on the medium popcorn and soda combo from the concession stand.

At the time of writing this is only available at three Ster-Kinekor theatres across the country: Eastgate Shopping Centre in Gauteng, Watercrest Mall in KwaZulu-Natal and i’langa Mall in Mpumalanga.

The MORvies Club, however, is where things get really interesting. Subscribers paying R349 for this tier will get to see up to five movies per day. The word “unlimited” has been thrown around for this tier, but there is a limit. That being said, five movies every single day is about as close to “unlimited” as we think is sane.

This tier also offers the same 20 percent discount on the medium popcorn and soda combo, and it is also offered at three theatres only, but they are different to the ones for the Fan Club.

Eastgate Shopping Centre in Gauteng as well as Somerset Mall and Garden Route (both in the Western Cape) will be offering the MORvies Club subscription.

If you’d like to subscribe to either tier, or read more about it, the official site for the SK Subscription Club can be found here, but make sure you read the terms and conditions.

Firstly, the Ts&Cs start off by saying that all of this is a “proof of concept’ and that, for the next six months, the details of the service may change.

If you’re thinking “does that mean they may change the price?”, well that’s a possibility, and it may be why they’re offering a three-month price lock for anyone who subscribes.

“1st payment is instant and the 2 follow up payments are in the form of debit orders, set on the members elected debit order date,” the site reads.

After these three months the subscription can be cancelled or continued.

It’s also worth noting that both subscriptions exclude what Ster-Kinekor calls “premium showings” like Cine-Prestige, DBOX and IMAX. Special events such as early showings and premieres are also excluded.

Finally, take note of how the two offers differ in terms of usage. The four Fan Club tickets can all be used for a single movie so you can take family or friends with you. The five daily MORvies Club tickets cannot be used on separate people at a single movie:

“Ster-Kinekor MORVies Club members cannot make multiple ticket purchases for the same session nor can they purchase movie tickets for any other person,” The site reads, “Only the registered member can use the card allocated to them and no other person or third party.”

While the prices on offer here are actually really compelling, all this small print has us a bit concerned. That being said: anyone who has had to buy a movie ticket recently will know that the value here cannot be denied.

After the proof of concept phase is complete it will be interesting to see if that remains the case.
