Huawei launches free 5G training course locally for ICT postgraduates

Earlier this week the world’s second largest mobile brand Huawei received some rather concerning news, as Google decided to restrict the company’s access to the Android operating system.

That seemingly hasn’t stopped any of their 5G plans though, as Huawei South Africa launched a free 5G training course for ICT postgraduates at two of South Africa’s public universities. Namely the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Pretoria (UP).

According to IOL News, the course is part of Huawei’s ICT Talent Ecosystem programme, which aims to grow and support ICT skills training and skills transfer in South Africa. This programme is specifically focused on the latest technologies of 5G, artificial intelligence and cloud data services.

“As South Africa moves into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) no one must be left behind. Most future applications in the 4IR era will run in a 5G network and environment, that is why it is our privilege to start this 5G skills transfer in South Africa, and we are glad to partner with Wits and UP to offer South Africa’s first 5G training for ICT students,” explained Huawei’s deputy CEO, Kian Chen.

IOL News adds that Huawei is widely acknowledged as the global leader in 5G technology, and it is the only equipment provider with end-to-end 5G products and solutions including 5G CPEs for commercial use and 5G smartphone devices like the foldable Mate X.

“I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Huawei South Africa for their vision in planning, not just for the balance sheet and bottom line, but also for the development and growth of human capital. This is an investment in the future and we are very happy to be associated with this 5G training programme, added deputy vice-chancellor at Wits, Prof Zelebon Vilakazi.

Furthermore Huawei South Africa is said to be planning to expand the programme across the country.
