Twitter reportedly mulling over ban of white supremacists on its platform

Twitter has proven to be a rather polarising platform over the years. On one hand it’s well suited for immediate engagement and useful as a social barometer, and on the other it has been a safe haven for trolls or those with divisive opinions.

The social media platform looks to be changing its tact, however, or at the very least looking at the way it handles content from certain groups.

In this case it is white supremacists according to a report from Motherboard, with the site noting that Twitter is finally questioning whether having them on their platform opens up the chance for dialogue and the potential for changes in thought, or simply that they are using the platform to spread their hateful ideologies.

While we never thought such a thing required exhaustive research, Twitter apparently does, as the company is said to be in talks with academics about whether it should de-platform white supremacists and other groups who use social media to spread hateful rhetoric.

As The Verge points out, with Twitter already 13 years old, for the platform to only be question such a thing is rather perplexing. Motherboard also noted the confusion of some researchers on the topic of de-platforming white supremacists.

The question then remains that if, and more than likely when, Twitter’s research suggests that they should de-platform white supremacists, will they in fact do so?

Until now Twitter has taken a very hands off approach to such content, so it should be interesting to see if they’ll be brave enough to enforce some changes.
