Intel’s new 10th Gen Ice Lake CPUs debut at Computex 2019

It feels like Intel has been drip feeding us information on its Ice Lake processors for quite some time, but now the new chipsets have finally made their debut at Computex 2019 in Taipei.

We’ve already seen the chipmaker debut some high-specced offerings with its Core i9-9900KS, but these new 10 nanometer Ice Lake chips are aimed more at the ultraportable notebook crowd. They’ve also been christened under the 10th Gen Core lineup, with the first wave of chipsets being branded in the U series, and i3, i5 and i7 variants available.

As for the design of these new 10th Gen Core chips, Intel has opted for a Sunny Cove architecture, which comprises of quad-core setup and eight thread arrangement. According to the manufacturer they will yield clocking speeds of up to 4.1GHz, with Intel also claiming an 18 percent increase in instructions per clock for this new generation.

The new chips will also be paired with Intel’s Iris Plus graphics system, which the company has detailed in its 11th Gen lineup. The upshot of this new pairing is a better fps rate for gaming, which is one area that Intel appears to be targeting for the Ice Lake chipsets.

Some of the other notable features of Ice Lake include WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and Thunderbolt 3 support, along with video encoding acceleration for HEVC/VP9 4K/60FPS formats, which editors should be interested in.

At this stage no specific hardware has been earmarked to feature the 10th Gen Core offerings, but it’s clear that Intel has the ultraportable notebook market in mind. To that end we may have to wait until IFA in September to find out which manufacturers will be kitting our their notebooks with the new chipsets.
