James Cameron congratulates Endgame for overtaking Titanic

After a $1.2 billion opening weekend, Avengers: Endgame has continued to rake in the dollars and recently overtook Titanic as the number two highest grossing movie of all time.

Titanic’s director, James Cameron, is not holding any grudges as he just tweeted out his congratulations directed at Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige and the rest of the team behind the MCU.

We know the Titanic is a real disaster which killed a lot of people so we’re not exactly sure about the choice of imagery here with the Avengers logo jotting into the side of the ship, but the sentiment is nice we suppose:

Box Office Mojo tracks films and their earnings and it usually does a good job at it. At the time of writing Avengers: Endgame is currently sitting at $2.27 billion, beating out Titanic at $2.18 billion.

This kind of “passing of the torch” between record breakers is nothing new. When Avengers: Infinity War took the highest grossing opening weekend from Star Wars: Force Awakens, the official Star Wars Twitter account tweeted out a picture of Rey handing a lightsaber to Iron Man along with a message from Kathleen Kennedy.

We understand that first example is a bit of self-congratulations as both Star Wars and Marvel are owned by Disney, but Marvel can dish out the compliments too. Back in 2015 Jurassic World overtook Avengers: Age of Ultron for the biggest opening weekend and Kevin Feige tweeted out a picture of Chris Pratt riding a t-rex… that is also holding Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. As expected this interesting image also comes with some text celebrating the event.

If Endgame manages to finally topple Avatar (also directed by Cameron) for the top spot at $2.78 billion, we hope to see another image in the same theme as all of these. Our suggestion is a Hulkbuster holding the Amplified Mobility Platform mech in a headlock.

And, yes, we did have to try very hard to not include “Endgame sinks Titanic” in the headline.
