Louis Vuitton and Royole put flexible displays on bags for some reason

If you’re clothes horses like us, you likely know that Louis Vuitton held a showcase of its Cruise 2020 collection over the weekend, and while we normally would not write about it, the show was notable for one reason in particular – flexible displays.

More specifically the French fashion house partnered with OLED screen and foldable phone maker Royole, with the pair revealing a range of bags featuring displays in them.

Most of the displays, found in the Instagram video posted below, tout a 1 920 X 1 440 resolution, and being AMOLED in their design, according to Engadget. The screens were placed both on sides of the slightly rounded bags, as well as the closing flaps, showcasing the flexible nature of the technology that Royole boasts.

If that name is new to you, it was for us too, with the company coming to our attention when they revealed the mobile industry’s first official foldable phone a couple of weeks before MWC 19 earlier this year.

As for Louis Vuitton, they calling these new products the “canvas of the future,” but it remains to be seen if this was simply a marketing stunt or something they plan to expand on in future. There are certainly some interesting applications for fusing flexible displays with luggage or apparel, but cost is no doubt a key consideration.

The bags showcased for Cruise 2020 for example have only been revealed for that particular show, so you won’t be able to head round to your local Louis Vuitton store to pick them up.

Whether Royole plans to partner with any other high fashion brands in the coming months remains to be seen. Nevertheless it looks like flexible displays are being tinkered with outside of the smartphone and TV scenario.
