Microsoft reveals Developer Edition of HoloLens 2 for $3500

At MWC 19 earlier this year Microsoft did not have any smartphones to show off, but rather showcased the HoloLens 2. At the time the device was only for display, with the firm slapping a $3 500 price tag on it, and noting that it would be released later in the year.

We still don’t have a precise release date for the highly specced headset, but now a Developer Edition of the device has been unveiled by Microsoft.

This model is priced the same as the commercial version, with the developer kit variant of the HoloLens 2 costing $3 500 too. As such devs aren’t getting a price cut on this HoloLens, compared to the original one.

As for what this Developer Edition is sporting, The Verge reports that it will include the HoleLens 2 headset, credits for Azure, as well as free trials for Unity Pro and Unity PiXYZ Plugin for CAD data. Added to this is support for Unreal Engine 4, with Microsoft noting that developers will get access to the application at the end of May.

Going off of that last bit of information, we’re assuming that both the commercial and developer versions of the HoloLens 2 will be available in select regions later this month.

We’ll have to wait for confirmation from Microsoft though. Hopefully accompanying that announcement will be the news that the firm will make the HoloLens 2 available in South Africa, with the previous iteration next to impossible to bring to South Africa.

With HoloLens 2 catered to use in the medical and engineering fields, as well as Microsoft’s Azure data centres landing in the country, bringing the headsets too makes a lot of sense.
