Asus Pro Art PA24AC Review: Visuals at a Premium

Okay, so full disclosure before we get into this monitor review. I’m not a content creator. I don’t edit videos or do any graphic design work.

I do, however, stare at a screen all day, whether it be to write news stories or reviews like this one, or watching streaming services like Netflix, or play PS4 games. As such a great screen is a must, which is why I was intrigued when the Asus Pro Art PA24AC crossed my path.

While I won’t be looking at the Pro Art monitor from the perspective of a content creator, I will be assessing it in terms of visual quality and usefulness as an all-round panel.

So with all that faff out-of-the-way, let’s talk about the PA24AC, and yes Asus could certainly use a more creative name for this monitor.

Plug in and go

The first thing to take care of is setup, and here the Pro Art offering is an absolute pleasure. All the components are easy to find inside the Asus packaging, and the display itself slides and snaps into place with relative ease. A quick press of a neatly concealed release button helps to detach the panel, and you’re good to go if needed.

The base of the PA24AC is also reassuringly sturdy, not showing any signs of sway while tilting or swivelling the monitor into the desired position.

There’s also the handy ability to raise or lower the height of the panel, with a track running down the centre of the aforementioned base. Said base is also perhaps the most eye-catching element of the PA24AC, with the silver base standing out nicely against the dark blue/black colourway of the display portion of the monitor.

Speaking of which the PA24AC is rather unassuming, which is a big plus in my books. There are no distracting design elements, such as a cheese grater-esque back, so if you’re on the lookout for a no frills monitor, this one is already ticking the right boxes.

Crisp and clear

Now let’s focus on the most important element- screen quality.

Here the Asus Pro Art PA24AC is not going to blow people away, but is in no way found wanting.

It’s serving up a resolution of 1920×1200, with the IPS panel measuring 24.1″ diagonally. That increased screen real estate is a boon for someone who often has to use a notebook while working, especially as it caters well to multitasking. If that isn’t big enough though, Asus also stocks a 27″ model of this monitor.

As for the quality, visuals were crisp and clear while doing simple tasks like writing stories. When enjoying some content on Netflix, things were equally solid as the 16.7 million colour gamut on offer provided a rich viewing experience. While playing PS4 games, things went by without a hitch either, with the 5ms response time resulting in a smooth visual gaming experience.

If there is one criticism, it’s how the monitor handles glare, requiring multiple adjustments should it be placed in an area that receives lots of sunlight. That said, there are few high quality monitors for which sunlight does not pose a problem.

Overall though the PA24AC is a good all-rounder in terms of visuals, capable of handling a bit of everything when called upon.

Well equipped

Now that we’ve gone through the front, it’s time to switch focus to the rear of the PA24AC and its port situation.

Here Asus has opted for a nice array of options.

There are two HDMI slots, one for USB Type-C connections and another DisplayPort 1.2 option. It also comes with 3.5mm headphone jack, should you need to drown out noise while working.

The ports are difficult to reach as the sit on the underside of the monitor, and it can become cumbersome depending on where the panel is sitting, but the face that it’s so well-appointed is definitely a plus.

Final verdict

The Asus Pro Art PA24AC is not cheap at R12 999 (RRP), but like many premium devices you’re not just paying for a brand name, but the quality that comes with it. On the visuals, construction, ease of use and ports, side of things this monitor is certainly worthwhile.

The question is whether you view it as a long-term investment to justify the price. If you need a trustworthy panel for creative work, which is your bread and butter, the PA24AC can certainly be viewed as a worthwhile investment.

That said, there are perhaps a few options out there that aren’t quite as good, but cost far less than the PA24AC. It ultimately boils down to the premium you place on visuals to do your job.
