$40K Prize pool offered up for official Cyberpunk 2077 cosplay contest

If you know your way around a sowing machine and EVA foam, you better start working on a new cosplay because a contest for Cyberpunk 2077 has just been announced with a prize pool of $40 000.

The video announcement for the contest is rather simple in its outline, tasking entrants with creating the most accurate cosplay they can using videos, screenshots, art or character guides (see above) to create their costumes, as the game is not out yet to use as reference.

Going to the official website for this contest, however, reveals that it’s a rather complex endeavour outside of simply creating a convincing cosplay.

The event seems to have two main stages: qualifiers and a grand finale. Qualifiers can be entered either online or offline, with the latter being done at certain events around the world.

These events are:

  • Gamescom (Cologne, Germany) 21st – 24th August
  • PAX West (Seattle, USA), 31st September – 3rd August
  • Tokyo Game Show (Tokyo, Japan) 12th – 15th September
  • Igromir (Moscow, Russia) 4th – 7th October
  • Paris Games Week (Paris, France) 30th October – 3rd November

Entrants who cannot make it to those events can also enter online, with a closing date of 30th November 2019.

Each of the previously mentioned events will have a single winner who will receive $2 000 as well as a ticket to the grand finale where all transportation and accommodation costs will be covered. Finally, these winners will also get a “goodie bag” worth $94. Second place winners will also be chosen at these events, but will only receive “game-inspired swag” as a reward. The exact details of this doesn’t seem to be available at the time of writing.

For the online entrants, five winners will be chosen with each receiving the paid for ticket to the grand finale. No cash prize or secondary winners will be chosen from this pool.

The ten winners from the offline and online pools will then compete for the final standings at the grand finale, though we’re not sure exactly where that will take place after combing through all the available details on the official site and the full rules PDF. We do know that it will take place in the first quarter of 2020, however.

Three winners will be chosen at the grand finale, with the prizes being as follows:

First place:
● $15 000
● Sponsored professional photoshoot in gaming magazine (approximate value of $12 700)
● Cyberpunk 2077 Collector’s Edition (approximate value of $250)
● Trophy (approximate value of $2 000)
● Cyberpunk 2077-themed goodie bag (approximate value of $300)

Second Place:
● $10,000
● Cyberpunk 2077 Collector’s Edition (approximate value of $250)
● Trophy (approximate value of $2 000)
● Cyberpunk 2077-themed goodie bag (approximate value of $300)

Third Place:
● $5,000
● Cyberpunk 2077 Collector’s Edition (approximate value of $250)
● Trophy (approximate value of $2 000)
● Cyberpunk 2077-themed goodie bag (approximate value of $300)
