Apple has iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS. Now the firm has unveiled a new operating system for one of its existing product lineups in iPadOS. They debuted it last night during the opening keynote for WWDC 19, and are now trying to differentiate the experience from iPhone to iPad.

The new features that Apple has worked for iPadOS seemed particularly geared towards productivity and multitasking on the iPad Pro devices. To that end Apple has added the ability to pin widgets to the home screen, as well as made the UI layout a bit tighter compared to the iOS 12 version.

The company has also updated the split view function to better cater to working within two separate applications simultaneously, along with a new Slide Over tool that allows users to multitask in apps like Mail for example, to compose a message on one part of the screen, and scroll through past emails on the other.

This functionality has been integrated into all of the native apps on iPadOS, with Apple also opening it up to developers to do the same.

Some of the other features that Apple is introducing as well include the ability to share files directly from the USB Type-C port should users have a compatible USB drive, cable or SD card reader.

Added to this is some refinements to the latest iteration of Apple Pencil, which has been able to reduce its latency from 20 milliseconds to 9 milliseconds. Should the Apple Pencil be out of reach, the company has also created new pinch, zoom and swipe gestures for editing documents.

Like iOS 13, iPadOS is currently available to developers, and heading to beta later this month. Thereafter it will land on compatible iPads in Q3 this year, although a specific date for rollout is not mentioned.
