This month’s GeekFest 2019 going Big on Japan

It is about that time of the year again, with GeekFest set to happen locally from 28th to 30th June.

This year’s festival, which also happens to be the seventh, will be held at Time Square in Menlyn Maine, with it also joining forces with the RUSH esports event.

According to organisers, GeekFest is aiming to the pop cult convention with a twist, and as in previous years it is created by geeks for geeks and aimed at promoting subcultures and clubs for all South Africans.

“We are thrilled to be hosting GeekFest for the first time, this event resonates with our belief in including people from all walks of life and subcultures,” said general manager at Time Square, Brett Hoppe.

The organisers add that the theme for this year is Big on Japan, and will see festival goers celebrating all things anime, manga and Otaku, as well as focusing on Japanese culture and gaming.

Furthermore, they say that there will be an array of market stalls that will be selling all sorts of geeky items. With the Arena having a kiddies play area too, they can run free, with food and beverages also on sale.

You can also try your hand at live action roleplay (LARP) in one of the arenas, enter the esports tournaments, cheer on your favourite robot during the RoboWars challenge, watch anime movies straight from Japan and show off your knowledge in the Geek Quiz. These are some of the activities the festival promises to have later this month.

For ticket sales go online or visit Ticketpro, Edgars, CNA or WeConnect stores.
