Industry analyst says 5G iPhone coming in 2020

When it comes to 5G phones, Apple is playing catch up, with a handful of manufacturers already revealing devices capable of supporting the mobile broadband standard at MWC 19 earlier this year already.

When Apple was still working with Intel, the timeline for a 5G iPhone was unclear, but now that the company has repaired its relationship with Qualcomm, noted industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the firm will have a device ready sometime next year.

With the switch in 5G modem supplier, we were hoping that Apple would surprise us with a new iPhone supporting the standard in September this year, when new iPhones are usually revealed, but it looks like that won’t be the case.

According to Kuo, this 2020 release is right on schedule for Apple, and as such it appears as if the company would be unveiling a device next regardless of whether it touted Intel or Qualcomm silicon.

The fact that it will be the latter is notable, especially as Qualcomm is further along its 5G plans that other component manufacturers, with the only possible exception being Huawei. With that Chinese company’s future harder to predict at the moment, perhaps the stars are aligning for Apple?

When speaking to MacRumors (a highly reputable source), Kuo added that Apple would have two 5G supporting phones, with one sized at around 6.7″ and the other far smaller at 5.4″. There is also said to be a third iPhone on the way next year, akin to the iPhone XR, but that model will reportedly measure 6.1″ and only support LTE connectivity.

As for when that 5G technology will trickle down to the lesser-specced iPhone devices, Kuo says 2021 is the year all of Apple’s new smartphones will support the standard.

With the likes of Samsung, LG and Huawei ahead of Apple in the 5G stakes, it should be interesting to see how the firm differentiates itself from the competition with this technology this year.

Given Apple’s history of making simple features sound amazing, we’re assuming some inventive marketing will be on the way.
