Samsung Display executive says Galaxy Fold “ready to hit the market”

2019 was supposed to be the year that foldable phones dominated the market, but with the Samsung Galaxy Fold launch continually delayed, and the fate of the Huawei Mate X up in the air, we’re yet to see any foldable device land locally.

When it comes to the Fold, a Samsung Display executive has confirmed that most of the issues that plagued the device a couple of months ago have been addressed, and the phone is “ready to hit the market.”

This according to Kim Seong-cheol, the VP of Samsung Display, who addressed a crowd during a conference at The Korean Information Display Society earlier this week.

According to Korean site The Investor, Seong-cheol added that, “most of the display problems have been ironed out.” Adding that the device would be launching in select market in coming weeks.

Unfortunately Seong-cheol did not mention what specific problems were addressed, or indeed which still require ironing out, but most of the issues cited by reviewers who received the Galaxy Fold prior to its initial launch centred around the protective layer Samsung placed on the foldable screen, as well as the propensity for dirt to wedge its way under the display. Added to this were visible creases at the actual fold of the screen.

If Samsung has indeed tackled all of this, the larger question is whether there is an appetite for the Galaxy Fold, especially given its continued delay and rumours of a massive price tag.

With Samsung Mobile South Africa is also remaining mum on the subject, it should be interesting to see whether the company is willing to run the risk and launch the Fold here.

Either way we may have to wait for next year in order for foldable phones to make an impact.
