US carrier cancels Galaxy Fold pre-orders due to lengthly delays

In April we reported that US carrier AT&T were informing their customers who pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy Fold that the device was expected to launch on 13th June. Now that the date is upon us, AT&T has offered up a new update, letting customers know that their pre-orders have been cancelled.

The carrier will be offering customers a $100 gift card as an apology for the delay, along with getting first dibs on the Fold when Samsung announces a release date.

The news isn’t all that surprising, especially as Samsung warned that delays would push the foldable phone’s release past June. As it stand now though, we have no confirmed release date for the device, which has had a rough couple of months ever since manufacturing quality flaws were found by reviewers who received the Galaxy Fold early.

What measures Samsung has taken since then are unknown, but seeing as how long the delays have been to date, is it still worthwhile for the South Korean company to launch the Fold?

We ask this as almost all consumer confidence in the quality of the phone will likely have eroded at this stage, and coupled with a massive price tag, consumers may now be scared off the product altogether.

With Samsung Mobile South Africa also staying mum on the local status of the Galaxy Fold, it should be interesting to see if networks and retailers will still be keen to stock the phone once it hits the market.
