MTN AWOOF Giveaway and MTN Free Dashout are fake accounts

The prospect of free stuff is enough to stop you from thinking straight, and you might find yourself fooled by fake contests that serve no purpose aside from putting your information at risk.

To try and help folks, MTN has sent out a statement alerting users to the existence of fake Facebook accounts parading as official MTN ones.

The two accounts in question are called “MTN AWOOF Giveaway” and “MTN Free Dashout”.

The MTN AWOOF Giveaway claims to be giving away cash prizes with prize money being as high as 200 000. 200 000 what you might ask? Your guess is as good as ours.

As for MTN Free Dashout, that page claims to be giving away cars, cash and more.

To use MTN’s words – these accounts are scams and only hope to ruin your day.

“We wish to strongly urge our customers not to fall prey to these accounts as they are not official and legitimate MTN accounts. Customers who wish to interact with us on social media can do so by using our official platform,” the telco said in a statement.

MTN goes on to say that is has noted a sharp uptick in the amount of what it refers to as “parody accounts” on Facebook. Some customers have even received friend requests from folks claiming to to be MTN agents saying they can help customers privately.

“We encourage our customers to be on high alert and when uncertain, to verify the validity of purported MTN social media accounts by calling our call centre on 083 808 or by visiting any MTN retail centre,” said MTN.

MTN’s official social media accounts are listed below and we urge you to refer to these for any contests or offers you spot out in the wild.
