Ape Out gets demo and 30% sale on Steam and Switch

One of the most interesting indie titles to come out this year was Ape Out – an intensely violent top down experience that used its minimalist art style and reactive music system to make something that was more than the sum of its parts.

In this game you play as a gorilla (hinted at as being called “Subject 4”) who is in some shady research lab before you break out and brutally slay everyone stopping you from escaping.

Aside from movement Ape Out is a mostly two button game – one for throwing enemies across the room – your main way of killing them – and one for grabbing them, turning them into human shields you can use for protection and offence until they too get flung into a wall.

If you didn’t pick it up when it launched in February, and you’re still a bit hesitant, you can now give it a go for free thanks to a new demo being added to its Steam and Nintendo eShop store pages.

The demo is around 800 MB (on Steam anyway) and we gave it a quick go to see what’s on offer. Ape Out’s very first introduction to the world was a unique playable trailer, so it has a record for doing clever things with short snippets like this.

The demo is the first set of levels from the full game and we got through it in around ten minutes. If you’ve never played the game before you can expect slightly more game time for this free slice, and replay is available and encouraged thanks to this game’s  procedurally generated environments.

We highly suggest giving the demo a go on either platform and, if you’re so inclined to buy the full game, it’s on sale too.

Both platforms have it reduced by 30% until 29th July, and you can check out our review if you need any more convincing.
