Honor 8S launched locally for R1999

When it comes to budget-friendly smartphone options in South Africa the options are endless, and the latest offering to enter the market is the Honor 8S.

The device is set to land locally from 19th July, with Vodacom being the first carrier to have access to it. The recommended price tag is R1 999, with consumers also able to get it on contract for R159 per month. Honor also says that the 8S will make its way to other networks and retailers following its Vodacom-exclusivity.

So what does R2K buy you?

The Honor 8S has a 5.71″ display up front and, in keeping with the industry trend, a dewdrop-shaped screen notch that houses a 5MP selfie camera complete with face unlocking. On the rear things get bumped up to a beefier 13MP shooter.

Under the bonnet the Honor 8S is packing a modest 2GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage. Added to this is a 3 020mAh battery, so there’s a decent bunch of components on offer here given the price.

Along with announcing this new entry-level device Honor South Africa head, Raymond Liu, also spoke about the firm’s local commitment despite some testing conditions.

“Although the tough external environment brought us some challenges, we managed the business continuity, and we will bring more products to the market soon, including high-end and budget-friendly phones,” he notes.

“We are continuing to work with service providers and retailers to ensure that we provide greater coverage and availability to our customers. Furthermore, we are aiming to become a pioneer in the 5G space in South Africa, and will be launching our first 5G smartphone in the country once the 5G network infrastructure is in place,” Liu.

Hopefully then that means that there will be more to come from Honor in future, with other devices other than its cheaper ones landing locally.
