Once a year Dota 2 fans dig into their pockets to fund the prize pool for one of the largest esports events in the world – The International.

The International is like the World Cup for Dota 2 players though unlike that tournament, The International takes place once every year.

Since 2013, the prize pool for The International has been crowdfunded with Valve starting the push with a few million dollars. The game’s community is then asked to help fund the prize pool through purchases of a Battle Pass.

This in-game item grants owners a few perks designed especially for The International as well as cosmetic items that cannot be purchased at a later date or time.

This year the prize pool has already climbed to $30 million, its highest level yet. What is of particular interest however is that there is just under a month left before the tournament kicks off which means the prize pool could grow even bigger.

That’s good news for Valve if it wants to maintain the crown of “biggest prize pool in esports” that was bestowed upon it.

Last year Epic Games earmarked $100 million for esports throughout this year. The publisher has said that there will be a $30 million prize pool for the Fortnite World Cup taking place later this week.

But of course Dota has now surpassed that figure by a cool $272 803.

This year The International will be hosted in Shanghai after last year’s event was held in Vancouver where OG managed to secure a long awaited tournament win.
