Tesla debuts V3 Supercharger in Vegas that charges 1500 EVs a day

About three years ago, Elon Musk unpacked his vision for a charging station that could charge the company’s electric vehicles (EVs) in a relatively short amount of time. That vision took a further step to becoming a reality as Tesla has unveiled its new V3 Supercharger in Las Vegas.

The EV maker chose Vegas as the location of the new charging station primarily as its Gigafactory is also located in Nevada, which would make servicing the station far easier.

As for what it’s capable of doing, Tesla explains that it can support a peak rate of up to 250kW, and is specifically designed to significantly reduce charging time for drivers. The station features 39 charging areas in all, and uses a combination of solar panels and the firm’s Powerpack batteries in order to charge vehicles.

In terms of charging time, Tesla says it takes 15 minutes at the 250kW peak rate to give one of its vehicles roughly 289 kilometres worth of driving range. Not all Tesla EVs can handle the peak rate though, with the Model 3 Long Range listed for now. If you have a Model S or Model X, the peak rate drops down to 200kW.

The company also notes that the V3 Supercharger station can handle up to 1 500 EVs per day, with the big upshot of such an offering being that Tesla owners in future won’t have to head to their local dealership or home in order to give their car some extra juice.

As TechCrunch points out, this isn’t the first Supercharger station that Tesla has unveiled, with two previous ones in California serving as test sites for the company. At this stage it’s unclear if Tesla plans to expand those two test sites to fully fledged Supercharger stations.

With infrastructure one of the biggest hurdles facing EVs at the moment, the V3 Supercharger is a big step forward for the industry. Now all we have to do is wait for Tesla cars to land locally.
