Destiny 2 Shadowkeep release date pushed to 1st October

Bungie has announced that the release of Destiny 2’s next expansion will be pushed back a few days and released on 1st October.

This is – as far as we can recall – the first time in the game’s history that a release has been pushed back.

“As we get closer and closer to serving up Shadowkeep and New Light, it has become increasingly clear to us that our releases for this Fall would benefit from a bit more time in the oven,” Bungie wrote in a blog post.

With Bungie splitting from Activision earlier this year, the firm is now wholly responsible for Destiny and as such it’s completely understandable that the team wants to make a good impression as an independent developer and publisher.

“We didn’t make this decision lightly. We know for some of you (us too), Destiny releases are events where you take time off of work or develop a sudden sickness that keeps you from school or work (we get it, a bunch of our team takes some time off to go on their own Destiny Jacket Quest). We’re sorry for screwing up your plans and we wanted to share this information as quickly as we could,” the developer said.

This delay does have an effect on the current Destiny timeline and Bungie has updated a few things players should be aware of.

Firstly, the raid that will accompany the Shadowkeep expansion will be called Garden of Salvation and it will release on 5th October. That release day is a Saturday which should make the race to a world’s first raid completion a lot more interesting.

Moments of Triumph will now run until 17th September giving you more time to earn in-game rewards (read: Bad Juju and the catalyst) and that sweet T-shirt.

Cross save will arrive later this month giving players time to organise their friend lists ahead of Shadowkeep. That means that launch day should just be a matter of finding your mates and forming a team.

For fans of Iron Banner (okay stop laughing, some people enjoy it okay) there will be an event for this mode in the week of 17th September.

While Bungie didn’t explicitly mention New Light, the free version of the game, we suspect that release is still very much tied to the release of Shadowkeep.
