Disney will bundle ESPN+, Hulu and Disney+ together to take on Netflix

The streaming wars are hotting up as arguably the most dominant force in entertainment today – Disney – prepares to launch its service.

Later this year Disney+ will hit the internet boasting the House of Mouse’s movie catalogue as well as new original series and movies.

Now Disney has announced that it will bundle Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu together in a single package that will cost $12.99 per month.

This news broke during Disney’s earnings call announcing its third quarter results.

“As we see it, our play in the digital OTT space, is to have general entertainment in Hulu, family entertainment in Disney+ and sports,” Disney chief executive officer Bob Iger said.

“That bundle we’re creating offers consumers tremendous volume, tremendous variety and tremendous quality,” added Iger.

The decision to bundle these services together is clever but it also shows us how much Netflix dominates the space. Even when Disney takes back ownership of its licensed films and TV, Netflix still has a number of high-quality shows and movies.

Following a report from The Next Web, the proposed bundle is good value as it comes in at $5 cheaper than if you subscribed to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ separately.

What is not clear however is whether this bundle will be made available to folks outside of the US as well. Iger was clear in saying this bundle will ultimately go global but for now it seems only folks in the US will be able to take advantage of it.

To our minds, the inclusion of ESPN+ will be a big driver for many folks still on the fence about streaming. Locally this bundle could prove problematic for services such as DStv which we believe is highly dependent on sport as a driver for subscriptions.

Disney sure is shaking things up as regards streaming and that’s a good thing for us, the folks just looking for something to watch tonight.
