Samsung partners with Microsoft & Qualcomm to debut the Galaxy Book S

Earlier tonight Samsung held a Galaxy Unpacked press conference in Brooklyn where the primary focus was the firm’s new flagship phone – the Galaxy Note 10. While much of the night was dedicated to the new mobile device, another offering made a surprise appearance in the form of the Galaxy Book S.

It’s a Windows-powered notebook that Samsung designed with the help of Microsoft and Qualcomm, as the South Korean company christened it as a new device in the era of mobile computing.

“Galaxy Book S combines the best mobility features Samsung has to offer with Microsoft’s leading productivity solutions and Qualcomm Technologies’ performance capabilities to deliver the best mobile productivity experience available in a mobile device today,” explained mobile division CEO, DJ Koh, about the new notebook.

While we’re yet to get hands-on with the device to find out if it indeed lives up to the billing, we can still run through the specifications, pricing and availability.

The Galaxy Book S will run either Windows 10 Home or Pro, depending on the spec, with a 13.3″ touchscreen display. The notebook is also lightweight, only tipping the scales at 0.96kg.

Powering the new device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Compute Platform, which features a 7 nanometer octa-core processor (2.84 GHz and 1.8GHz). There’s also 8GB LPDDR4X RAM on offer, with a choice of 256GB or 512GB storage. Added to this is a claimed 23 hours of battery life from the 42Wh unit onboard, as well as support for LTE Cat.18 and a nano SIM.

The Galaxy Book S is launching in the US in September, starting at $999 (RRP), but there is no official word yet on how much, or indeed if the notebook will be coming to SA. For now we’ll have to wait to see what local Samsung representatives say.
