Special, physical release of Enter the Gungeon comes to the Switch

An absolute slew of new games have hit the scenes thanks to Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase and Gamescom 2019, but let’s once again talk about Enter the Gungeon – a title that came out in 2016.

It’s worth returning to the bullet hell roguelike again as fans and newcomers alike can now buy a special physical release of the title from the folks over at Special Reserve Games. You may remember that name as they’ve created physical runs and collector’s editions for many indie games which would otherwise not get such treatment.

This company worked with Enter the Gungeon in the past to create the Ammonomicon – a real book based off of the one seen in the game. When that was sold last year promises of some physical release for the Nintendo Switch were made, which is what we’re getting now.

This new bundle for Switch owners includes the following: the game cartridge itself in the standard Switch plastic box, new (and reversible) cover art for that box, an instruction booklet, a large sticker, 24 page art book with metallic cover, and a cardboard slip case.

That slip case is made to hold the Ammonomicon as well as the game box. The intention here is that, if you already own the book, you can combine the two and put them on your shelf.

This decision doesn’t make a lot of sense to us as all orders of the Ammonomicon from last year came with their own slip case, even if they were ordered on their own without the game.

Regardless, this bundle will cost $34.99 and pre-orders will be live later today on SpecialReserveGames.com.

At this point we have to note that the Switch version of Enter the Gungeon is one of the worst ways to play the game. We’ve put many hours into Gungeon on several platforms and the more demanding sections of it put a tax on the console that it can’t keep up with leading to slow downs that affect the gameplay to a huge degree.

As the the game has been out for a while now and has such a dedicated fan base, we assume most of the people buying this are collector’s looking for an addition for the shelf anyway.

If you fall into that category we do want to point out that this isn’t the first time that Enter the Gungeon has been made into a physical released on the Switch. Earlier this year it got a general release which can still be bought right now. The difference there is that you’ll be missing out on all the extra physical goodies Special Reserve Games is including.

Considering that the general version costs $30 and contains so much less than this version for $34.99, we still recommend getting it from Special Reserve Games. The problem here is that the latter option we recommend is a limited edition offer and may not be available by the time you read this.
